According to aromatherapist Valerie Ann Worwood, author of The Fragrant Mind, the only essential oils you should use in a sauna are eucalyptus, tea tree, and pine because these oils enter the body through inhalation and leave by perspiration. These oils are considered excellent cleansers and detoxifiers.
However, Esoteric Oils states that you can also use peppermint, lemon, lavender, niaouli, clary sage, cypress, birch, rosemary, lime, grapefruit, and bergamot essential oils in a sauna. Most importantly, you want to make sure you use only non-irritating oils and don't overdo them.
Do NOT place undiluted essential oil on the heated rocks of the sauna. Rather, blend the essential oil with water and then douse the rocks. Blend two drops of oil in about a pint (600 ml) of water.
If you have an infrared sauna that has no rocks, Sauna Talk recommends adding several drops of essential oils to a spray bottle filled with water and spraying the surfaces of the sauna.
